11.R.4I This lesson focuses on understanding literal and non-literal terminology in a text. Students will learn how to identify various types of figurative language, distinguish figurative from literal language, and comprehend that words can have multiple meanings. Students will also understand the differences between connotations and denotations and how they influence the tone of a text; in addition to knowing when and where technical terminology language is used.


Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and
technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone (e.g., how the
language of a court opinion differs from that of a newspaper). This lesson’s content is of high educational quality.
