Ecosystems and Food Chains

5.B.CB1.IE4 – Uses models to describe that energy in animal food (used for its recovery, growth and movement, and to maintain the warmth of the body) was originally solar energy. Examples of models may include diagrams and charts.

Throughout the lesson, the students will understand the importance of energy flow in ecosystems. The students can associate the transformation of energy between organisms, with food consumption and the role of the sun in such processes. They will apply the key concepts, learned in the lesson, when building models and analyzing the effect of human action on food chains.

At the end of the lesson, the student:

  1. describe the importance of energy flow within an ecosystem;
  2. explain how solar energy is the main source of energy on Earth;
  3. create a model to explain how many foods come from solar energy.

This lesson’s content is of high educational quality. It is designed with a model of a conceptualization, definitions, examples, practice exercises and test with different levels of complexity. In addition, it includes rubrics for an objective evaluation.
